Whats Love Got to Do With It Movie Review

What's Love Got to Do with It (1993) Poster

Memorable Performances For Intense Drama

Celebrity bio-pics are very striking or miss, just in one case in a great while a really adept i comes along--and WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH Information technology is one of them. Based on the autobiography of Tina Turner, the film offers a glossy but intense portrait of her rapid rise to stardom under the sponsorship of hubby-managing director Ike Turner--a human relationship that quickly turned night and became increasingly calumniating equally Tina's fame began to outstrip Ike's ain.

Although the motion picture is a bit on the obvious side, it is well-crafted and the two leads offer powerhouse performances. Angela Bassett is simply astonishing as Tina Turner; where most other actresses might have simply imitated, Bassett accomplishes the impossible: she makes you believe that she is Tina Turner, capturing both Tina's famous on-stage performing style (the concert scenes are really exciting) and giving a completely believable interpretation of her off-phase personality too. The script offers Laurence Fishburne petty more than a one-dimensional part, merely he plays it brilliantly from offset to end, and both are well supported past the overall cast.

At that place is certainly a dandy bargain more to the lives of both Ike and Tina Turner than this picture conveys--but what it does prove it presents with considerable power and conviction, and by the time Tina finally hits back at Ike yous'll be roaring for her to striking him again--and again--and once again--and eager to see her finally triumph entirely on her own. Recommended.

2 Red-Hot Blazing Performances Bring Fire, Glory and Nuance to Tina Turner's Story

It was gratifying to see rock fable Tina Turner earn the coveted Kennedy Heart accolade last month, certainly reason enough to revisit this wonderful biopic based on her 1987 self-affirming autobiography, "I, Tina" co-written with Rolling Stone editor Kurt Loder. Directed by the late Brian Gibson in an appropriately feverish manner, the 1993 movie still burns brightly thanks to the electrifying performances of Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. In that location have been several fine performances in biopics of late - Jamie Foxx in "Ray", Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in "Walk the Line" - but I still feel Bassett and Fishburne maintain the high watermark as they seem to inhabit the roles of Ike and Tina completely in this film.

Adapting probably the nigh melodramatic parts of Tina's book, Gibson and screenwriter Kate Lanier congenital a dramatic framework about the former Anna Mae Bullock that is somewhat standard-issue and probably biased, merely it works on a visceral level as a story of personal triumph punctuated past some of the most gut-wrenching scenes of domestic violence captured on pic. Playing i of the nigh recognizable and enduring celebrities in the rock earth, Bassett manages to capture the physical mannerisms, vocal patterns, and onstage free energy of the real Tina, even though her voice manifestly had to be dubbed. With her almost distracting musculature, she assuredly rips into all her musical performances with unabated fire, but it'south actually in her dramatic scenes, peculiarly when she becomes an increasingly degraded victim of her hubby's demons, that she soars. Fishburne has an extremely tough role, as he has to transcend the inherent villainy of Ike past displaying the bravado and talent that brought the pair the spotlight in the early years. He brilliantly manages to imbue a spirit that is at once frightening and pitiable.

With a relatively sparse filmography, Gibson provides surprisingly sturdy direction here, often using an effective false-combination of grainy home movies and Television receiver programs to make the moving-picture show feel similar a "Behind the Scenes" rock documentary. I particularly liked how he edited the inevitable "Proud Mary" - complete with gyrating Ikettes and Tina in her classic cavern woman mini - to show the passage of time between the late sixties to the mid-seventies. Unsurprisingly, no one else makes nearly the impression of the two stars, though Jenifer Lewis has a few funny moments every bit Tina'south female parent Zelma, and Vanessa Bell Calloway does what she can in her switch from hard-bitten dorsum-up singer to becalming Buddhist. Regardless, see it for ii actors - sadly underutilized since this movie was released, the wondrous Bassett in item - giving all they have into this memorable moving picture. The DVD has no pregnant extras other than the original trailer.

Angela Bassett should be proud

I watched the motion-picture show recently, and was amazed past how bright it was. Non knowing about Tina Turner's life, I was shocked. The movie was pretty difficult hitting.

Laurence Fishburne was amazing in his part, he was very scary, and it just made you detest Ike for existence so evil. Angela Bassett's performance was outstandingly amazing though - I've never seen and then much good acting out of someone in a movie.

All in all, I loved the movie, and whatsoever awards for information technology were well rewarded.

A Tina Turner biopic that is carried past the performances

Tina Turner is a great and influential performer, and many of her songs are classics for a reason. When hearing that at that place was a biographical drama, based on Turner'southward autobiography 'I, Tina', the showtime feeling that came into my head was intrigue, but also the worry as to whether it would do her justice.

On the most role, 'What'southward Love Got To Do With It' does. Certain, 'What's Love Got To Do With It' is a picayune obvious and over-simplified dramatically and a few of the musical scenes stop the menstruum at times that slows the pic downwardly. With that being said, 'What's Dearest Got To Do With Information technology' has got a lot to recommend information technology.

Its biggest asset is the lead performances, two pb performances that 1 would draw as powerhouse. Angela Bassett gives a beautifully observed and deeply felt performance in the championship role, her performance feels incredibly existent and does non fall into the trap of being an impersonation. Every chip equally good is Laurence Fishburne as Ike, on terrifying form. Both characters are very much convincing and have strong chemistry together.

'What's Dear Got To Do With It' is nicely filmed and designed, besides equally sympathetically directed. As predicted, the songs are terrific and well staged and performed. The script on the most part is heartfelt and avoids falling into making the characters clichéd caricatures or descending into over-heated melodrama. The story also by and large grips and tin be very touching and illuminating.

On the whole, intriguing and very well done with powerhouse lead performances that carry the pic faultlessly. eight/10 Bethany Cox

great performances, powerful motion-picture show

Angela Bassett, equally Tina Turner asks the musical question "What'southward Dearest Got to Do with Information technology" in this 1993 film as well starring Laurence Fishburne, Jenifer Lewis, and Khandi Alexander. The film tells the story of Tina Turner'due south babyhood equally Anna Mae Bullock her move to St. Louis later her grandmother'southward death to live with her mother, her meeting Ike Turner at a nightclub, her subsequent singing with Ike's band, their marriage and divorce.

By necessity, biopics have to leave out people and incidents, often combining several incidents into 1 or skipping several steps. In no way does a cognition of Tina Turner''s life detract from the impact of this flick. It'south a story of a adult female's determination, chirapsia the odds, suffering, perseverance and ultimate success.

Ike's and Tina's spousal relationship was pretty much a horror show. Ike was always controlling, to the detriment of his own career, and as he turned to drugs, his abuse of Tina escalated. The near stunning scene in the picture (besides the performances, which are fantastic) occurs when the couple fights in a limo en route to a hotel. Ike becomes physical; Tina has discovered Buddhism and finally gets the courage to fight back. A bloody mess, she runs away from him with only 36 cents in her purse.

Angela Bassett gives a searing, electrifying performance every bit Turner. Her sinewy trunk is a groovy match for Turner's, and she uses it to perfection in replicating Turner'south performances (Turner's voice is used on the soundtrack). She shows the star's vulnerability, fright, and internal strength throughout.

Bassett is matched by Laurence Fishburne's terrifying performance as Ike. Fishburne seethes with manipulation and anger, fifty-fifty in scenes where he's existence "squeamish." When Ike loses his temper, you can see how he tin can't stop and the violence but gets worth. A brilliant performance.

A must run into. The latter part of Turner's life is non explored, just while she ever remained popular in Europe, it was a long time before she could become a recording contract here after some failed recordings. Today she remains one of the greatest singing stars ever. Only there were lots of valleys in between.

great leads but expected more than

Tina Turner (Angela Bassett) was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee. She was abandoned past her parents and raised by her grandmother. Later on reuniting with her female parent and sister, she meets and eventually marries charismatic band leader Ike Turner (Laurence Fishburne). The volatile relationship turns violent with the drug addicted Ike.

There is admittedly nothing wrong with the two leads. In fact, they're doing cracking work. This is based on Tina Turner's book and even features her performing in the endmost credits. Obviously, she has final approving. I don't have a trouble with that since her abuse by Ike is well documented. It does leave a sense of sanitized history to some extend. It's much better than a TV biopic but information technology still some of that flavor. While it doesn't back abroad from the abuse or Ike'due south drug apply, information technology shows the ugliness but the style of the film lacks the darkness. I exit that mostly on director Brian Gibson who doesn't have much in the way of mode. This is a solid biopic but with the two great leads, I await more than.

music is what makes life worth living

Offset, I should annotation that I don't know most of Tina Turner'south music, and I've never seen whatsoever of her performances. That said, "What'south Dearest Got to Practise with It" is a fine motion picture. Even though biopics have become a cliché - and many of them are cynical excuses to get the stars Academy Award nominations (the god-awful "Homo on the Moon" is one of the worst offenders) - this is even so a film that yous take to see. Starting with Tina's humble beginnings when she was still known as Anna Mae Bullock, we run across her move to St. Louis where she meets Ike Turner. She presently becomes part of his act and marries him, just to find out that he has a volatile side.

Angela Bassett puts on the performance of a lifetime every bit Tina. I understand that she managed to impersonate Tina's moves to a tee. And so at that place's Laurence Fishburne as the abusive Ike. His performance made me feel as if I was walking on eggshells. The residue of the characters aren't developed that extensively, simply the focus is supposed to be on Tina and Ike anyway.

Bassett and Fishburne received Oscar nods for their performances. Although they didn't win, yous can't deny the effort that they put into these roles. It affirms them as two of the greatest actors of their generations. It'due south one outstanding film, and I recommend it.

In more recent developments, Ike died in 2007. Tina renounced her US citizenship and now lives in Switzerland with her electric current married man.

Meet Anna Mae Bullock (aka. Tina Turner)

Yes. Even though this 1993 bio-picture was a somewhat exaggerated retelling of 22 years (1958-1980) in the turbulent life of famed pop singer, Tina Turner - It was still, without question, certainly well-worth a view.

Packed with plenty of brutally-violent drama, and high-energy musical numbers - Both actress, Angela Bassett, and thespian, Laurence Fishburne gave disarming, top-notch performances as a pair of dynamic performers and ill-fated lovers whose repeated head-on collisions with each other could merely pb to one concluding conclusion.

All-in-all - I recommend this picture, highly.

*Trivia notes* - Angela Bassett'south singing was all dubbed by Tina Turner.

Manager, Brian Gibson died in 2004.

Much ameliorate than I expected

As a young girl, Anna Mae Bullock is left behind when her female parent flees an abusive married man. As a immature woman she comes to the urban center to rejoin her mother and sister. Going with her sister to a local guild, Anna Mae is drawn onto the stage by ring leader Ike Turner and reveals a powerful phonation. He takes her into his band and the two go onto success, marriage and children with Anna Mae taking the stage name Tina Turner. Yet beneath the surface, Ike is a fierce man and Tina is forced to either defend him or escape.

I accept seen this twice already, although I'thou not a Tina Turner fan and don't discover her music to be that practiced (aside from a few of the bigger hits) but I do know a powerful motion picture when I encounter it. The plot is based on the biography of Tina Turner and, because it is official, the end consequence is that information technology lacks an eye that approaches with fair judgement. The picture show therefore builds up the strength of Ike and the resolve of Tina and is a little too reverent at points like Tina finding force in Buddhist chanting. However it is hard to miss the cynical centre when you accept that having a violent husband and being trapped is a hard situation that anyone does well to come out of.

The moving-picture show is moving just never lets itself become overly emotional or sentimental. Instead it just soldiers on similar Tina herself and the terminal scenes requite yous an impression of someone who has overcome to get to where she is. Usually it would be difficult to feel for someone who is as rich and successful as Tina Turner and it is to the film's credit that it has managed it. Function of the reason for this is a sympathetic however potent performance from Bassett (i of the better black actresses effectually). She at times seems to be simply impersonating Turner (during the music pieces) just she is in her chemical element in the rest with a meaty part not ofttimes offered to her. Fishburne is good and bad in dissimilar means. Firstly he is proficient considering he grips the audience and commands attention and is, every bit always, an excellent actor given the chance. Even so he is besides powerful – the real Ike is less physically dominant and Fishburne doesn't do him justice – appearing to point the blame on drugs and no inner turmoil.

Overall this is a good film that deals with a hard subject matter. The fact that it is a true story only makes it better. Strong black leads and emotionally involving makes for a good lookout man even if it'south hard to describe the violence at times as `amusement'.

Acting, writing, directing, and musical showcase

"What'southward Dearest Got to Do With It" is a fascinating and arresting portrayal of the first 43 years of Tina Turner's life. It accurately and convincingly depicts the abuse she underwent and her escape and, finally, salvation through Buddhism. Laurence Fishburne is ane of this generation groovy actors and gives a riveting and observant performance every bit Ike Turner, but cannot come close to the overwhelming, breathtaking, and mighty presence of Angela Bassett as Tina. She deservedly won the Golden Globe every bit the Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical of 1993 and if the film had come out any other twelvemonth than 1993 (during which Holly Hunter gave a performance of a lifetime in "The Pianoforte"), she would take easily taken home an Oscar.

Music plays a huge part in the motion-picture show and all of information technology is good. Though I'm only 12, I truly capeesh Tina's music and am always in awe when she sings "Proud Mary" (one of my favorite scenes in the motion-picture show.) As Roger Ebert pointed out, one of the nearly triumphant scenes is where, later on Tina and Ike have had a fell and bloody fight, Tina runs abroad to the Ramada Inn where they take her in. It is one of the best acted scenes of this decade and I never tire of it when I see the film again.

"What'southward Love Got to Do With It" is one of the all-time films of 1993 (ane of the greatest pic years in history- "Schindler'south List", "The Pianoforte") and one the well-nigh passionately and skillfully performed films of the decade.

Tina should be proud.

How could anyone not like this film? Unless they were Ike Turner, that is. When nosotros walked out of seeing the pic during its get-go run in the theater, my husband commented dryly, "Well, that film didn't pigment a very flattering portrait of Ike." and we both laughed at the understatement. If you've read the Tina's book, though, you'll know that the movie goes VERY easy on him-while only a typical abusive bully in the flick, Ike treated her much, much worse in real life. I call up if they put even half the corruption and torture he put her through in real life, though, the moving-picture show would accept been too much of a downer-you got the idea. Fishburne does a proficient job of making Ike so charming when Tina kickoff meets him that you tin can see why she falls in beloved with him, until he turns into a monster. Angela Bassett is only fantastic, she has Tina down perfect, though her upper torso is so pumped up in some scenes she looks almost masculine. Tina Turner was (hell, however is at 60) toned and buff, just not a female bodybuilder. Her performance is dynamic and heartbreaking, and I can't spotter the scene where she finally gets ill of his abuse and starts fighting back. When she finally hits him dorsum in the scene in the limo, I heard the loudest cheers and applause in the audition that I've heard since I saw Thelma and Louise. I've seen the movie dozens of times and her passion in that scene still gets me emotional every time.

But the real reason I spotter the movie over and over (particularly when I'1000 trying to become motivated to work out) are the musical numbers. They include among others "A Fool in Beloved", "Stone me Babe" a great montage to "Make me Over", but the centerpiece of the flick has got to be the perfect recreation, correct downwardly to the choreography, of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue'southward "Proud Mary". It is full of then much free energy and rocks so much that your jaw will only hang open in anaesthesia when Tina and the Ikettes start going into their dance moves. I never get tired of watching that scene (well-nigh every bit good as the real thing). I'thou still trying to figure out how they kept their wigs on when they were whipping their upper bodies dorsum and forth, they danced so hard. Oh, and the costumes (particularly on the Ikettes and the "Proud Mary" fringe dress) and period particular are not merely authentic but To Dice For. I tin't recommend this picture plenty. She should have got the University Award, non just the Golden Globe, and the pic should have got the Oscar for best moving-picture show of 1993.

The tale of a gigantic talent entrapped in a human being's egomania...

Tina Turner was probably the first singer I knew in my early on years, at that place was something nearly her cracked voice, her vertiginous hair, her big smile that made her memorable before her own songs. So watching her biopic "What's Got Honey To Do With It?" (adapted from Turner'due south autobiographical book) was like witnessing the dull process that turned the vulnerable Anna Mae Bullock into the flamboyant Tina Turner. Aye, when the film concluded, I was similar "that'southward the Tina I know" ... merely the 1993 biopic wasn't virtually that Tina, merely about the i whose proper name was associated to another name (and if only it was just the proper name!)

Starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne in two Oscar-nominated roles, the film makes 2 contradictory statements: without Ike Turner in that location wouldn't exist Tina and withal without him, she completed her transition. Permit's collect the thoughts hither: Ike discovered Tina during 1 of his concert in some minor nightclub simply Anna Mae was much willing to sing and gave such a spectacular functioning that information technology was an audience rather than an exhibition. Information technology's true that Ike saw the potential of Tina and took the best out of her and it's truthful that likewise putting her on the track, he gave her some good songs and gave her the proper noun only it's no less true that Tina had a few successes on her own, and that she came up with the wigs' ideas and that if information technology wasn't for her presence, who know whether Ike's career would take went further than 1965.

So that's the duality: Ike is convinced that he made Tina, that he owns her and she owes him. Merely all through the motion picture, we see a woman whose natural vocal talent tin be owed to anyone but her... except if she believes that she'south beneath Ike, and Ike has arguments to make her believe that, arguments... and fists. So in an infuriating series of wife-beating and verbal abusing scenes, we witness the regression of Tina's ego while her talent blossoms to no extent. If annihilation, this is a movie about someone who'south got the talent but lacks the strength. The babyhood episodes could feel like the usual 'humble kickoff' requirements of any biopic but what they testify is a little girl who'due south thrown abroad from a gospel choir considering she doesn't have the right tempo and after abased past her mother (who took her sis).

The babyhood episodes are crucial to empathise her need for singing and the fashion she brutal instantly for Ike: this is the homo who believed in her potential and treated her fifty-fifty better than her mother (Jennifer Lewis) did when she finally joined her. But the female parent who wanted Anna Mae to work every bit a nurse is quickly convinced by a shine-talking Ike that singing is the right investment. It doesn't take long for Anna Mae to build a reputation and inspire the jealousy of Ike's 'favorite' and mother of two children. In a harrowing scene, the woman doesn't bother killing Anna Mae because she'southward not "worth the bullet". So much for cocky-esteem again. Inevitably, Anna surrenders to Ike when he laters admits his dearest. It'south true he needs her just even truer is that she needed someone who'd need her. Both are really insecure people with a demand to be important but one's got no reasons to doubt almost her.

"What's Got Honey To Do With It?" isn't your typical musical biopic, and as if director Bryan Gibson was aware of it, he doesn't overflood us with singing montages or abundant press covers editing, this picture is a couple study and could work every bit well as an inspiration for women suffering from marital bullying, the film fifty-fifty made information technology #85 in AFI'due south Top 100 Cheers (inspiring movies). I didn't listen the musical parts as much as I felt bad watching the vulnerability of Anna Mae and the growing self-centered vileness of Ike. Such films would instantly fail if it wasn't for the performances of the two leads only Basset is incredible, she tin can play passion and enthusiasm simply always with that look in her eyes that hints at whether she's enjoying it or she's simply working out of fear. Equally Ike, Fishburne plays a control freak who's despicable in the way he blames Anna to the point of gaslighting her, watching him is witnessing a slow descent into evil madness.

There are many cardinal moments in the motion picture and information technology's easy to first with the first beating or the first encounter with Buddhism where her soul salvation lied. But I spotted many subtle moments where I could identify when Anna Mae was in trouble: when the crowd kept shouting Tina and you could see Ike slowly moving in the shadow (he was getting the message) or another moment where later on her outset solo success with producer Phil Spector "River Deep Mount High", he expressed his rage in the near outrageous way. You know at that point that dearest has naught any to do with whatever Ike sees in Anna, and the film rightfully avoids the ocean of pathos and takes us immediately to the 10 minutes during where we see Tina finally fighting back in the limo (I can imagine crowds cheering in the theaters) followed by her desperate escape to the Ramada Inn (and I could imagine her sleeping in foetal position and staying in her room for three days after that) and the court sequence where she gives up all royalties to keep up ane nugget that she needs to pursue her career: her name. At that point, Anna Mae acknowledges her own merit and we know she's changed.

And whether the last confrontation did happen or non is secondary, this is a film about a cracking talent that was trapped for too long in a jail made of one man's egomania and when Tina left Ike, I had the same cheering listen than when Billy escaped in "Midnight Express".

St. Tina

Warning: Spoilers

The deification of St. Tina and the deserved crucifixion of Ike, starring the magnificent Angela Bassett, is harrowing and crackling with electricity. Maybe the only movie with more domestic violence than *Mommie Dearest*, this is the motion picture bio to stop all movie bios. From the earliest scenes of a rambunctious Tina (or Anna Mae, as she was known then) acting up during choir do, we, the audience, belong to her completely, irrevocably winning usa through empathy and admiration for such a feisty, plucky spirit. Showing Ike equally a famous R&B star and suave ladykiller at the time he meets the young Tina, Ike wins her through a combination of persistence and flattery, appealing to her vanity and sense of loyalty ("I make them famous and then they run off," Ike tells her). But they team up and, equally we know, and make musical history. Their codependency is of the direst sort – he *fabricated* her and feels like he owns her, and she only wants to please him. Merely pleasing Ike is a tall order, and whatsoever success is only temporary. We are taken on a wild ride of spectacular performances in vivid colour – both the great achievements of the duo, as well as their darkest hours, merely equally Ike slides into drugs and domination, the situation is as hopeless every bit most codependent situations are. We encounter Tina as she is, once again, beaten to a lurid…but perhaps for the concluding fourth dimension. She runs away, and with a wrenching scene in which she appears in the foyer of the neighboring Ramada Inn, begging for shelter, we are begging with her, praying for some nameless act of clemency to evangelize her from evil. She makes a relatively clean getaway, winding up in the hands of Roger Davies, her director (and a producer of this motion picture), who engineered one of the greatest comebacks in history. Of class, Ike tries desperately and unsuccessfully to woo her back, telling her how he *made* her, but so becomes ridiculous, uttering to her in 1980, "You ain't no Donna Summers." But we know what the effect of that is – Tina's personal success and lifetime appointment as posterchild for Survivors Anonymous is legendary. Angela Bassett is one of the finest actresses alive, but has all the same to produce annihilation rivaling this functioning. She is backed up by a number of extremely strong performances, especially that of Vanessa Bell, in a stand-up performance as her friend Jackie, who not only proves to Tina that she can escape from Ike, but also shows her a way to inner-peace through Buddhism. During the closing credits, we see the existent-life Tina perform the title vocal, only it is a complimentary, and even negligent operation, that undermines the audience's belief in Basset as Tina. The crime is that this film did not receive Academy attention – for art management and costuming alone, it is the exquisite evocation of an extremely lively era and lifestyle – as an almost perfect production, information technology meshes together the cinematography, script, acting and music into a dazzling and sometimes horrifying, but always riveting tour de force.

A National Enquirer interpretation; entertaining swill...

Although based upon Tina Turner's co-authored autobiography "I, Tina", "What's Dearest Got To Do With It" plays like a condensed version of a star's memoir, half-made and the other half taken from a supermarket tabloid. While the performances are spot-on, dauntless and intense, and the original tunes frequently sound incredible, the facts and details of Anna Mae Bullock's relationship with R&B shaker Ike Turner remain hazy and suspect. Certain set-pieces, similar Tina's recording session with Phil Spector, wait marvelous only serve no particular purpose (and the film lets the states recall Ike had no involvement in a group-project that resulted in a full anthology, not just a single release). Angela Bassett is undoubtedly just the perfect choice to portray the exciting Tina Turner, only what of Turner's own tumultuous personality? The movie'south narrative gives all the burn down and acrimony to husband Ike, despite Tina's burgeoning muscular arms (she didn't go those muscles from Buddhist chanting!). Also lost are the solo years between leaving Ike and finding success on the popular charts in 1984. The motion picture hopes to wrap things upward with a little unnecessary melodrama, but just fouls itself up trying to make a (tired) point about finding 1'due south inner peace and independence. The look of the film is quite remarkable throughout, and the early sequences are entertainingly staged, but very petty of the film'due south final tertiary rings true or comes to close to matching what music-historians know to be accurate. **1/ii from ****

Excellent story of Ike and Tina,,,, and and then Tina Turner.

I actually loved Ike and Tina Turner. then I got to dearest Tina Turner. I remember I was and so sorry style dorsum when they split up but,,... after seeing this movie Then So,,, many years later, I see why. Perchance Ike was a driving strength for the grouping, but Tina fabricated it happen and as far as I tin can tell, Ike didn't like that he was then along for the ride... and couldn't accept it. It is Likewise bad he didn't know/or sympathize at the time what was or would've been best for for his kids and himself. Famous or non, til people understand information technology'southward FAMILY that matters, nothing will ever be right. I know this is a Hollywood-ish blazon-style movie, but I'm proud Tina did what she has washed for herself, and I'thou glad I got to grow upwards Knowing Both Ike and Tina, and then Tina Turner.... This is...history in the making.

Even if things were exaggerated, this was truly an astonishing movie and inspirational

I merely happened to walk past What'due south Love Got To Do With Information technology in the video shop and remembered how much I wanted to see the movie, I am a fan of Tina's, take been since I could crawl. When I was 4 years one-time I would walk around with a walk man and sing out loud "What's Honey Got To Do With It?", and my mom would express joy and she eventually told me when I got a little older what the song was about. I yet blast and sing the song every fourth dimension I hear information technology and understand it's power, afterwards, I wanted to read the book I, Tina and my heart was shattered for Tina and I just wanted to exist like her and have her strength. Finally, I saw this moving picture last night and I was blown away by such a terrific performance past Angela and Lawerence! They were truly astonishing and fabricated this motion-picture show an incredibly biography.

This is based on Tina Turner's life, mainly what happened between her and Ike, the utter and horrific abuse that ensued by Ike by his jealous rage of Tina's spotlight. Tina has only one friend past her side that truly defends her against Ike and Tina tries so difficult to get away, but Ike won't permit her. Finally, Tina has simply had enough in an extremely emotional scene, they have a fight in the limo and Tina swings back at Ike finally! Y'all merely cheer and scream for her to leave and she finally gets what she truly deserved, the solo career and utter fame for being a truly gifted star.

I have a feeling things were a fleck exaggerated in the pic, you know, the fights? Merely I think almost 25 years of an abusive marriage is hard to get into a ii hour film, then they had to make you lot understand the pain Tina went through. Angela did a terrific job, one of the best performances I accept ever seen in fact, I was just cheering for her in that limo! I cried and cheered for Tina, she is truly a remarkable woman and to sympathize that, delight read the book and watch What's Love Got To Do With It.

Inspiring

I've seen this film several times since it came out. Information technology'southward a tough spotter the violence and abuse are blench worthy at times. The pic always feels real and despite the disturbing content, the end effect is utterly inspiring. Based on the truthful life story of Tina Turner the motion picture chronicles her life when she was abandoned as a child and than when she moved to the city and met a married Ike. Soon after they're married and she begins to become more attention the corruption begins and gets worse and worse. She's exploited for her talent by him and eventually she finds the strength to leave the state of affairs and become the Tina we know and love today. Filled with solid performances all around. Laurence Fishburne is horrific as Ike Turner but it'southward Angela Bassett who steals the show. She's a revelation. It's truly one of the best performances ever on film. She justly won the gold globe and an oscar nomination which she should accept won. Even watching it now the picture is an inspiring, intriguing and powerful slice of movie theatre.

Terrific biopic of singer Tina Turner

Information technology took me a while (xviii years), but at my wife's urging I finally got circular to watching this superb moving-picture show nearly the harrowing life of pop singer Tina Turner. The film is brilliantly directed by the late Brian Gibson, whose previous moving-picture show in 1991 had been the life story of another famous black singer, Josephine Bakery. Only the picture sizzles and fascinates primarily because of the sensational performance of Angela Bassett as Tina Turner. She is just a knock-out. I presume her singing may accept been dubbed by Turner herself. Simply whether she sang or non, her operation was dazzling, full of charm and sweetness also every bit carrying all the heartache, emotional defoliation and weakness, joys and sorrows. This is really a superior biopic, and the true story has plenty to tell! One should not neglect to mention that the piffling girl who plays Tina as a child, Rae'Ven Larrymore Kelly, is besides superb. (She has grown up and appeared now in 42 films.) Tina Turner had a crude time in life, and it is shown very vividly in this moving-picture show. She married an egocentric, fierce, borderline psychopath named Ike Turner (died 2007), who beat her up regularly for years. Men who beat up women are actually sick, but women who let men beat them up year in and year out without leaving them are sick too. In the film her excuse for not leaving Ike is said to be because she 'tin't abandon family', due to the trauma of her horrible mother having abandoned her as a child. That does not wash. Merely let u.s. not heap arraign upon the ravaged Tina Turner for the horrors she endured and for her determination over and so many years to remain a victim rather than salvage herself. At last she did summon up the courage to salve herself, and she also went on to reinvent herself. So this is a story of heroic endurance and dedication to her art past a girl who was born to sing. If she suffered a lot forth the way, well, that's life. Merely the songs continue.

Cinema Omnivore - What's Love Got to Do with It (1993) 7.3/x

"WHAT'S Honey... knows what appeals its audience most and makes a meal of it, factual fidelity gives way to tweaking here and in that location, like the blight which haunts the biopic genre, intentional simplification sours one's appreciation. And if Gibson's tactless management isn't worth much ovation, it is Bassett and Fishburne'due south electrifying performances that truly matter, they are both nominated for an Oscar. For Fishburne, his Ike is like a tyrant without charisma, his musical talent is dwarfed past his outward meanness, information technology is a catchy, categorically objectionable role, yet, in Fishburne's able hands, Ike isn't only a menacing-expect monster (although the script makes him ane), there is scant spark in his eyes, especially in the fictional confrontation scene where he pulls out his pistol, trying to earn an upper hand over the now liberated Tina, Fishburne has that stunning, almost transfixed look when he realizes that his browbeating pettiness tin no longer intimidate Tina, Ike is licked, reduced to a pathetic fool, and that await alone makes him a human again, however remotely."

Spotlighting Tina Turner

If you're seriously looking for a really intense depiction of the turbulent era (from 1958-1980) in the life of pop singer, Tina Turner, then, "What's Love Got To Do With It?" should certainly satisfy your clamorous curiosity for a good part of this motion picture's 2-hour running time.

I mean, hither's a super-slick bio-picture that sure lays it on extra-thick when it comes to all of the highs (as well equally the lows) that have punctuated both Turner's personal and professional life throughout these many years.

Great Performer, Skillful PC Heroine

Wow, what a great story to promote Liberal and political correctness! Here were tin make a hero out of a woman - even better a black woman - and brand a man look terrible and promote Buddism at the aforementioned fourth dimension while taking shots at Christianity. This has every filmmaker'south leftist calendar, all rolled into one movie. Slap-up!

Rock superstar Tina Turner (played well by Angela Bassett) is the discipline in the biography, which is still interesting despite the obvious agenda in certain areas. It's nicely photographed and has wonderful music. The story is interesting and tolerable except when Tina's hubby "Ike" (Laurence Fishburne) gets abusive. Wife-beating is too ugly to relish watching.

On a personal note: Tina Turner volition get down in history as ane of the all-time greatest live stone performers ever. Her shows were fantastic and for her to exist out at that place dancing at 60 years of age was remarkable.

Better as picture show than a biopic only it'due south great notwithstanding.

There is plenty wrong with this flick equally a biopic, nonetheless when you look at it as purely being a motion-picture show, it is a surprisingly great one.

I never really considered Tina Turner to exist such a proficient subject area for a biopic, specially not in the 'ninety'southward. Start of all she was nonetheless alive and at an all fourth dimension popular height and second of all, she in my opinion is not a that big star, when compared to all other people who go a biopic made near them. Merely I must say that afterward seeing this film i take a whole lot more respect for her by at present and I was definitely wrong nigh her career and life not being worthy or interesting enough for making a movie about information technology.

The moving-picture show was a positive surprise. But yet there all the same is plenty wrong with it every bit a biopic. It suffers from lots of the stuff other genre movies ofttimes suffer from. Thing with biopics often is that you lot try to capture a persons unabridged life and career into a ii hour long movie. This means some stuff will oft get rushed and shoved down your throat. You ofttimes just have to take things for granted, without them e'er getting developed properly and convincing enough, like would be the case in a normal moving picture drama about a normal boilerplate, every twenty-four hours person. And yes, this happens quite a lot in this motion-picture show. It often makes some very sudden jumps with its story and make jumps in time besides. We just never get to come across how pop Tina Tuner is with the public and some things seem to happen very randomly in this film, just because they happened in her real life as well. Information technology at times feels like some stuff really got crow-bared into the film. They movie because of that also feels quite distant at times equally a biopic, since you don't e'er become the feeling you are really getting into the grapheme.

But having said all that, the flick still works out great. The story is always intriguing and keeps you interest throughout. Information technology'due south also really fast-going, which makes this a bit of a distant one when it comes downwardly to its emotions and characters but at the same time keeps this motion-picture show consistently adept to spotter, since you never get bored with things.

It'due south also true that it are the actors performance that continue the movie going and make this a smashing watch. Angela Bassett actually shines and she deserved her Oscar nomination. Same goes for Laurence Fishburne as the abusive Ike Turner, who is perhaps the foremost reason why this moving-picture show remains such a proficient and interesting picket. His graphic symbol, no thing how awful he is, is still what gives the story as well as the Tina Turner some real depth. Because lets face information technology, would Tina Turner's life had been interesting enough for a biopic if she had never met Ike? I really don't call up so.

Merely of course the moving-picture show does not but focus on her personal life but also her career. It'due south quite fascination to see how she started out and at several points at her career had to first all over again but every fourth dimension came back stronger, as a performer and person equally well. It's why I now have so much more than respect for her after seeing this film. I at present kind of wished I would had gone to her concert when she was in town here a decade ago. Besides, I really don't think y'all have to exist a fan of her music in guild to relish and capeesh her incredible stage presence and performance. Same sort of goes for this movie. You really don't have to exist that much in Tina Turner in order to really like and appreciate this movie.
